Roy Bailey foundred Lambourn Valley Cider in 1995 to produce real Berkshire cider from local apples.

Brook Farm Cider is made in North Herefordshire by Peter Keam. He runs a one-man show and makes cider from traditional cider apple varieties.

Janet and Martin Harris run an organic smallholding at Bodenham, not far from Leominster. They produce organic soft fruit, pork, eggs and also cider and perry. The cider and perry are not yet soil association registered but they have bought an orchard which is in conversion.

Their speciality is Normandy-style naturally sparkling cider. The partially-fermented cider is bottled in a champagne bottle with a wired down cork. The fermentation continues in the bottle until the build-up of pressure stops it, leaving some natural sweetness in the end product.

James Marsden and Helen Woodman have made a name for themselves in Herefordshire cider- making circles and regularly win prizes for their perry. Their small production of cider is generally sold at events such as the "Big Apple" and local farmers' markets.

Gregg's Pit is the name of the farm and also a variety of perry pear.

This cider is made by Mr. T. Meredith from the apples in his small orchard of Gloucestershire cider apple varieties. The cider varies from year to year following the natural cropping cycle of the individual trees.

Newton Court is a farm just south of Leominster, boasting some of the oldest orchards in the county.

Draught cider is available from the farm shop and also on line in bag in box format and 50cl bottles. Tom and Paul Stephens make the cider & prize-winning perry.

Tom Oliver is a perry specialist having honed his perry-making skills at Hindlip College. The fruit is hand-picked from unsprayed trees and the juice is fermented by natural yeasts and matured in old oak barrels.

Tom has been instrumental in gaining "presidium"status for perry as an endangered product under the auspices of the International Slow Food movement.

More of Ton's delicious ciders and perries will be available when the 2006 vintage is ready to be bottled.

Made by the roving cider-maker, Kevin Minchew. One-time winner of the CAMRA Pomona award, he scours the countryside for the ancient trees bearing the varieties of fruit he requires.

Steve Burson makes quality ciders and perries at Drybrook, in the Forest of Dean. He has just won a silver medal for his cider at the CAMRA national championship in Reading.

Knight's Cider, Knight's Cider,

Crumpton Oaks Farm, Storridge near Malvern, Worcestershire.

The orchards extend over the Western slopes of the Malvern Hills. Storridge is on the Herefordshire side. This family firm has recently been taken over by Aston Manor. However, the Knight's own label cider is still the same high quality cider made from freshly pressed juice from their own orchards.

Lyne Down is a farm high on the Marcle Ridge with a long history of cidermaking. The man in charge is Mark Catlin. Lyne Diown Ciders can be found in the farm shop and at various shows around the area.

Gwatkin Cider & PerryGwatkin Cider & Perry

Dennis Gwatkin makes his cider and perry in the Golden Valley, a remote corner of Herefordshire, close to the Welsh border. He believes in minimum intervention in the cider-making process and his ciders and perries are very fruity. The ciders and perries are mostly made from single varieties.

Sorry, especially to Radio 4 Listeners, Dennis is now completely out of perry until the next lot has finished fermenting and is ready for bottling, probably in June 2007. Watch this space.

Ross is one of the warmest places in England and a wonderful place to grow fruit. Mike Johnson grows traditional cider apple varieties and has planted a new perry pear orchard, at Broome Farm, Peterstow. Watch out for his wonderful Cider Festival in early October. Alpacas graze under the trees.
